- Inhale four seconds. Nose. Slow and full. Belly first, then lower chest. Shoulders stay relaxed. If your shoulders are rising toward your ears you are chest-breathing, which is shallow. Fix that first.
- Hold four seconds, lungs full. Do not clamp down. Keep your throat and face relaxed. This hold is the attention anchor — it demands just enough focus to stop your mind from wandering but not so much that it feels effortful.
- Exhale four seconds. Let it go smoothly, nose or mouth, whatever feels natural. Do not push. The exhale should feel passive.
- Hold four seconds, lungs empty. This is the hard part. The urge to inhale kicks in strong. Resist gently — this empty hold is where the CO2-driven cerebral vasodilation happens, and also where the mental training lives. Staying calm through the urge to breathe is transferable to staying calm through the urge to check your phone.

How do I know if it is working?
You will know. Two to three minutes in, the mental static quiets down. The itch to check your phone fades. You feel awake but not buzzed — alert and calm at the same time. If you want objective feedback, check your heart rate before and after. A drop of five to ten BPM during box breathing is a solid indicator that your parasympathetic system has activated and the focus effects are online.
Can I do this with my eyes open?
Yeah. Eyes closed deepens the relaxation side of things, but open-eye breathing — especially with the breathing light as a visual anchor — works just as well for focus. The anchor keeps you oriented to the external task rather than drifting into internal rumination. For pre-task prep, open eyes is probably better.
What if four-second holds feel too long?
Drop to 3-3-3-3. Or even 2-2-2-2. The box structure — equal counts for all four sides — matters more than the exact number. Your CO2 tolerance builds over a few weeks of practice. I started at 3-3-3-3 and moved to 4-4-4-4 after about two weeks. Some people eventually work up to 6-6-6-6. That is not a goal though, just a side effect of practice.
